D-type connectors most commonly consist of two and sometimes more parallel rows of connections. The connectors feature a D-format metal shell that provides mechanical strength and limited screening protection. The metal shells of plug and socket make contact to enhance screening effectiveness.

Panel mounting connectors are typically secured using nuts with additional threading that allows mating connectors to be secured together, preventing loosening. Free connectors can accommodate backshells that provide screening and cable screen connection, or plastic protection with strain relief capabilities.

For common connector types with two rows of pins (9, 15, 25 and 37 way), pins are spaced approximately 0.108 inch (2.74 mm) apart with rows spaced 0.112 inch (2.84 mm) apart. Higher pin counts and densities are achievable using additional pin rows.
