D-type connectors typically consist of two or more parallel rows of connections enclosed within a D-format metal shell. This design provides mechanical strength and limited electromagnetic screening, as the metal shells of the plug and socket make contact when connected. Panel mounting connectors are secured using nuts with additional threading to prevent mating connectors from working loose. Free connectors can be equipped with backshells that offer screening and connect to cable shielding, or plastic backshells that provide protection and strain relief.

For common connector types with two rows of pins (9, 15, 25, and 37 way), pins are spaced approximately 0.108 inch (2.74 mm) apart, with rows spaced 0.112 inch (2.84 mm) apart. Higher pin counts and densities are achieved using additional rows of pins.
