D-type connectors most commonly consist of two and sometimes more parallel rows of connections. The connectors feature a D-format metal shell that provides mechanical strength and limited screening capabilities. The metal shells of the plug and socket make contact to enhance screening effectiveness.

Panel mounting connectors are typically secured using nuts with additional threading that allows mating connectors to be secured, preventing them from working loose. Free connectors can be equipped with backshells that provide screening and connect to cable screens, or plastic backshells that offer protection and strain relief for the cable.

The pins in common connector types with two rows (9, 15, 25 and 37 way) are spaced approximately 0.108 inch (2.74 mm) apart with rows spaced 0.112 inch (2.84 mm) apart. Higher pin counts and densities can be achieved using additional rows of pins.
