D-type connectors most commonly consist of two and sometimes more parallel rows of connections. The connectors feature a D-format metal shell that provides mechanical strength and limited screening capabilities. The metal shells of the plug and socket make contact to enhance screening effectiveness.

Panel mounting connectors are typically secured using nuts with additional threading that allows mating connectors to be secured together, preventing them from working loose.
