D-type connectors typically consist of two or more parallel rows of connections within a D-format metal shell. This design provides mechanical strength and limited electromagnetic screening when the plug and socket shells make contact. Panel mounting connectors are secured using nuts with additional threading to prevent mating connectors from working loose. Free connectors can be equipped with backshells for additional screening or protection, along with strain relief for cable management.
