D-type connectors typically feature two or more parallel rows of connections within a D-format metal shell. This design provides mechanical strength and limited electromagnetic screening when the plug and socket shells make contact. Panel mounting connectors are secured using nuts with additional threading to prevent mating connectors from working loose. Free connectors can be equipped with backshells for screening and cable protection, while also providing strain relief.

Standard D-SUB connectors with two rows of pins (9, 15, 25, and 37 way) feature pins spaced approximately 0.108 inch (2.74 mm) apart, with rows spaced 0.112 inch (2.84 mm) apart. Higher pin counts and densities are achieved using additional rows of pins.
